Introduction
Creating many questions in bulk is possible by importing an Excel file that includes the questions as well as their configuration - such as possible answers, the correct answer(s), the number of attempts, and more.
This is especially useful for creating assessments and question banks, as well as migrating from another system.
Once imported into your content item, the bulk-created questions behave like any other questions in your content - they can be further edited, configured, re-ordered, and adjusted to your needs within the hosting content item. Imported questions are created as full-page questions and may be combined within the content item along with any other type of content and media/question interactions.
Bulk Import currently supports the following question types:
- Multiple Choice
- True/False
- Text Response (open questions)
How does it work?
Creating questions in bulk is easy and intuitive, plesae follow the steps described below.
Create a content item (or edit an existing one)
Within a workspace, a course, or a stream, create a new content item or edit an existing one.
In the content editor, click on Add Questions:
Switch to the Import Bulk tab and click on the Import File button:
Download Excel template
The import window will open. First, download the questions template Excel file:
NOTE
It is advisable to always start by downloading a fresh copy of the template file, as the template file structure might change from time to time.
Prepare your Excel upload file
Open the Excel template file, and fill in your questions instead of the sample questions provided with the template.
Enter one question per row in the spreadsheet, and fill the relevant columns according to the question type. Here's an example:
In the last section of this article you will find a detailed explanation on each field in the file structure. Note that not all fields (columns in Excel) are relevant for all question types.
Upload the file and select questions to import
When your file is ready, click on the Upload File button or drag the file into the upload area:
After the system processes your file, a preview window will appear. This window will display all questions that were detected by the system. Here's an example:
Unselect any questions you don't want to import and click the Import button when ready.
In case of errors, the platform will help you with guiding instructions for the problematic questions. Scroll down to review all errored questions, and refer to the row number in your Excel file:
You may click Cancel, fix your file and upload the corrected one.
After making your selection and clicking the Import button, the selected questions will be created as full-page questions in your content item:
Each imported question is fully editable and may be dragged within the thumbnails strip in order to place it in the right location within your content item.
NOTES
- The imported questions will be inserted starting from your current location in the content. E.g. if you're on page 5 and you selected 15 questions, the system will create pages 6-21 with one question per page.
- The platform will not check whether the same question already exists in the target content item. This allows full flexibility, i.e., you may upload a bulk of identical questions and then perform minor edits within the content editor user interface.
- The maximum number of questions per upload is 100. The system will reject your file if more than 100 questions are detected. In this case, please split the file into two or more files. Note, however, that in terms of learner experience it is not advisable to have more than several tens of pages in the same content item (regardless of the bulk import functionality). In such cases, it is recommended to create several shorter content items rather than one long one.
File Structure
Every row in the template Excel file represents a single question. The columns define the question type, the question itself, possible answers in case of a multiple choice, as well as additional configuration parameters that vary according to the selected question type.
IMPORTANT
The first row of the file should not be modified. These column titles are used by the system to identify the purpose of each column and map their content to the right configuration field.
Following are more details about the columns in the Excel template. Please refer to the relevant question type:
